Steven David Walton (b. 1987) is a self taught photographer born in the US.

I grew up below the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and as a child I remember seeing them deep on the horizon from the top of the hill off the main road on the way to my childhood home. Early on a crisp morning in the rearview or later in the afternoon I remember seeing their soft rolls jutting out from the otherwise smooth line formed by the tree tops of the old growth that covered most of North Georgia. I remember always wanting to explore the forest in our backyard and tracing the creek feeding into the lake up to its source and later, as a teenager, exploring those exact mountains as I learned land navigation and survival. After primary school I moved away from Georgia and spent time exploring the high desert and mountains of New Mexico and Colorado with a tent and sleeping bag, and much later adding a Pentax 67 and many rolls of film.

For the last 10 years my curiosities have taken me outside the US to isolated communities like New Zealand, Iceland, Faroe Islands, and Greenland. There is something about the people who live in these places and their interconnectedness to their respective landscapes and cultural histroy that pulls at something deep within me. They aren’t free from the modern distractions that occupy our western lives but they strike a strange balance with them, rooted in the power of the Nature that shaped their histories. It’s easy to look out and see the convergence of how things were in the old times and how things are now.

My work follows my travels exploring these new and old places and people in a search to find a deeper connection to the world, putting a voice to the screaming silence we work so hard to ignore. I use different formats of film and digital camera to capture pieces of these moments as a reminder that everything changes with the passage of time. Many people seek media as an outlet that allows them to escape. My focus is catharsis, to be present, to be awake.

My current focus is making prints and organizing small expeditions in the Arctic to share some of the profound experiences captured in my photography. There is a transformation happening in these fragile vast places and we should bear witness for ourselves and for the next generations.

Limited prints available in Print Store and upon request. Details on upcoming expeditions in Greenland and Iceland coming soon!
